Gauhati Commerce College Students Stage Protest Over Election Troubles

GUWAHATI: Over 200 students at Gauhati Commerce College staged a protest over the upcoming student elections within their institution.

The primary grievance that triggered the protest which was staged on Tuesday revolved around troubles and irregularities encountered during the candidate selection process.

A student from Gauhati Commerce College while speaking to GPlus said, "The protest erupted because there were some troubles in attendance of candidates." Students have alleged discrepancies in the attendance records of candidates, leading to the disqualification of several aspirants.

The initial list of candidates revealed that three positions remained vacant due to candidates failing to meet attendance requirements or neglecting to complete necessary forms, prompting their disqualification. In one instance, a candidate vying for the post of General Secretary initially had an attendance record of 70 per cent, which later increased to 86 per cent within a span of three days.

The elections, which were originally slated for October 5, have now been rescheduled to October 9 in light of these issues.

Speaking to GPlus, a senior official from Gauhati Commerce College stated, "The attendance scrutiny went wrong initially, but now we have rectified the process, and new election dates have been scheduled."
