GUWAHATI: Ganeshguri Market vendors are caught in a predicament as the long-promised redevelopment of their market hangs in uncertainty.
Talking to GPlus, a grocery seller, seeking anonymity shared the prolonged ordeal faced by vendors in this bustling market.
"Back in 2015, the construction of this building commenced. In 2016, GMC assured us it would be completed within 18 months, but we witnessed no progress. In 2020, the work resumed briefly, only to be halted by the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, there has been no visible change," lamented the vendor.
Adding to the vendors' woes, the financial burden has increased significantly. The vendor highlighted, "Initially, GMC charged us ₹260 per month, but now the charges have skyrocketed to ₹520 per month."
Baruah, another vendor at Ganeshguri Market, expressed frustration over the continuous shifts forced upon them due to the ongoing construction saga. "Since our time here, we have relocated three times, shuffled from one spot to another, all in the name of construction," Baruah explained.
However, talking to GPlus, a senior GMC official stated, "This year, Ganeshguri Market will undergo comprehensive redevelopment. The half-constructed building will be transformed into a modernised infrastructure, providing vendors and shoppers with an upgraded market experience."
As Ganeshguri Market vendors navigate through the uncertainty surrounding the long-overdue redevelopment plans, their struggles paint a picture of perseverance in the face of challenges.
