Gambling Cases Rise in Guwahati Hills Ahead of Diwali

GUWAHATI: Cases of gambling have risen in the areas surrounding Narengi, Satgaon, and Panjabari in Guwahati. G Plus contacted the Police officials of the aforementioned areas who indicated that the majority of incidents are from the hills where Police movement is restricted. 


As per sources, Narengi, Forest Gate, Mathghoriya, Patharquary, Noonmati are the hot-bed for such activities. A senior official in Guwahati Police indicated that most cases are from the hilly areas. 


The Satgaon Police also confirmed about the rising cases of gambling and other associated activities in the hills of Panjabari. Officer-in-Charge Sunil Kalita stated that the majority of cases have risen since the onset of Lakhmi Puja.

"The operation in remote areas has always been there, especially in the hills of Amching Jorabat and Panjabari".


The Police received information from Panjabari Batakhuli over gambling and caught red-handed Babuji Barman, Abdur Rahman, Joytish Das. Cash money of Rs 4,030 was also seized along with other gambling materials. 


In a similar fashion, the Police received information from Amching Jorabat that some people were engaging in Jhandimunda, a dice game. Sub Inspector (SI) Bitupan Gogoi along with his accompanied staff rushed to the spot.  On seeing the police some of them fled away from the gathering but one Bitu Ali attacked the police party and injured Havaldar Ashok Kumar badly. He also tried to snatch the arm of Constable Bhadra Kanta Bora.


When Bitu Ali tried to escape from the apprehension of the police, he fell down and injured his left hand because he was under influence of alcohol. Later, he was brought to the police station and medically examined.
