Frequent Crimes Concern Citizens In Guwahati But Police Data Claims 50% Decrease In 2022

GUWAHATI: The citizens of Guwahati are panic-struck after the city witnessed multiple chain snatching incidents at gunpoint, frequent theft cases, and broad daylight murder but the data provided by the Guwahati city Police claims that the city registered a 50% decrease in overall crimes in Guwahati.

Talking to the media on Monday, January 2, the Police Commissioner said that in some cases the public neglects. ‘Because of negligence, criminals get opportunities to commit a crime. Arrangements have been made to control it by actively engaging with the public and the civic body,’ he added.  

According to a report by Guwahati Police, a total of 10,234 cases were registered in 2022 with previous pending cases of 34,530. Only 17,112 cases were disposed of by Guwahati Police in 2022 while 21,545 cases were disposed of in 2021. There are still a total of 27,652 cases pending at the end of 2022.

Guwahati Police registered 72 murders, 34 attempts to murder, 7 Dacoity, 22 robberies, 589 burglaries, 2,807 theft, 3 rioting, 62 rape, 11 arsons, 319 torture 498 A, 72 extortions, 25 counterfeitings (FICN), 224 CBT, 11 Dowry death, 1352 cheating, 308 woman/girls kidnappings, 73 other kidnappings, 2989 other IPC crime, 4 immoral Tr (P) act, 237 NDPS act, 751 other act cases. A total of 10,234 cases were registered in 2022 whereas 20,679 cases were registered in 2021.

Stating that the aim of the Guwahati Police will be to control criminals, Commissioner Barah said that Police will be able to control crime with the help of the public. There has been no sudden increase in crime in Guwahati, he added. ‘There have been a few incidents of some crimes at the same time. There have been similar challenges before the Guwahati Police in the past and the Guwahati Police is ready to take up the challenge,’ he added.

He also said that 22 people had been caught in the chain-snatching cases and two pistols have been recovered.

Answering about the Ranjit Bora murder, he said this is a challenge for the Police. Everything will be clarified only after the investigation.
