Four Dead As Severe Storm Hits Assam

 

GUWAHATI: A severe storm that struck Assam on March 31, 2024 resulted in the death of four people including one child, as per reports.

A total of 10 districts have been affected by the storm, including Nagaon, Morigaon, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Udalguri, and Cachar.

As per initial assessments, 17 revenue circles and 45 villages have been affected, impacting a population of approximately 329 individuals. However, these figures are subject to updates as detailed assessments continue in the field.

The storm has claimed one life, while two individuals lost their lives to lightning strikes in Mazbat R.C. of Udalguri District and Donka R.C. of West Karbi Anglong. Additionally, one person lost their life in a boat capsizing incident in Mankachar R.C., South Salmara District. Six individuals were injured and admitted to SMCH Silchar due to lightning strikes in Cachar R.C.

A total of 24 houses have been fully damaged, while 243 have been partially damaged. Infrastructure, including two Anganwadi centers in Demow R.C. of Sivasagar, and several electrical installations belonging to APDCL have also suffered damage. Detailed assessments are underway to ascertain the extent of infrastructure damage.

In the boat capsizing incident in South Salmara yesterday, two individuals from village Nepureralga, P.S Sukchar, under Mankachar R.C., are reported missing. Tragically, one child lost their life in the incident, with the body being recovered the following day. Search and rescue operations, led by SDRF and NDRF teams, are underway, with additional support from ASDMA deploying drones for surveillance.
