GUWAHATI: Plans for the construction of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) were revealed by the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma during the foundation-laying ceremony of the NFSU in Guwahati on Thursday.
The NFSU, with an estimated cost of ₹300 crore, will be spread across 50 acres of land in the Molong, Changsari area of the Kamrup district.
The announcement came as Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, laid the foundation stone and launched the Assam Police Seva Setu App at the Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra in Guwahati.
Anticipated to be completed by 2030, the NFSU campus will offer 3,000 seats across various departments.
Undergraduate and postgraduate courses in 50 subjects, encompassing forensic science, cyber forensics, drone forensics, digital forensics, intoxicating forensics, forensic justice, and more, will be available. Additionally, the university will provide PhD and post-doctoral facilities.
During the ceremony, Sarma stated, "Today marks a significant achievement for the people of Assam as our state gains another national-level university. The NFSU will emerge as a Center for Study in Southeast Asia."
Acknowledging the growing importance of forensics in recent years, CM Sarma announced that a temporary forensic education course will commence at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) campus.
Furthermore, he revealed that 500 police officers will undergo forensic training in Gujarat this year. Currently, 48 officers are already undergoing training.
