GUWAHATI: The foundation stone for the Dighalipukhuri-Noonmati Elevated Corridor, touted to be Assam's longest flyover was laid on New Year’s Day on January 1, 2024.
The ceremony, held yesterday, signifies a major stride towards easing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity in the region and was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The 4-lane corridor, spanning 5 kilometer and featuring two exits, is expected to be a transformative addition to Assam's transportation network. Chief Minister Sarma, in his address at the ceremony, also highlighted the significance of this ambitious project in addressing the growing traffic demands of the state capital.
Chief Minister Office, Assam took to X to put out, “HCM Dr @himantabiswa laid the foundation stone of the 4-lane Dighalipukhuri-Noonmati Flyover, Assam’s longest Flyover. The 5 km long flyover, with two exits, will be constructed at a cost of ₹852 cr and is scheduled to be completed in 2026.”
The corridor estimated to be worth ₹852.68 crore will be constructed by Shree Gautam Construction Co Ltd- Anupam Nirman Pvt Ltd (joint venture) and will be a four-lane stretch with 15.5 meters in width with a total number of 98 pillars.
Despite being the longest elevated corridor in North East, the public is not happy with the decision.
The Public Works Department's (PWD) decision to construct the 5.44 km long corrdior connecting Dighalipukhuri and Noonmati has also recently stirred up controversy among the citizens residing in the region. Locals are strongly against the notion and alleged that neither the PWD nor the state authority initiated any public hearing to discuss the pros and cons of the new developmental project. The flyover is scheduled to be completed by 2026.
