Fish Prices Soar In Guwahati Markets On Uruka

 

GUWAHATI: The fish markets of Guwahati, including Uzanbazar, Pandu, and Ulubari, are witnessing a rise in fish prices ahead of the Magh Bihu celebrations on Monday, January 13. As people gather to buy fish, meats, and other traditional delicacies, the demand for fish has surged, pushing prices to high levels.

On the occasion of Uruka and Magh Bihu, fish becomes an essential part of the feast, and the prices reflect the increased demand. At Uzanbazar market, prices for popular varieties such as Barali fish range between ₹1000-1200, while Sital fish is priced around ₹700-800. Rou fish can be found at ₹500-600, and Aari fish is commanding prices as high as ₹1000-1500.

Similarly, in Ulubari market, Silgharia fish is being sold for around ₹900, and Barali fish is priced at ₹800.

A vendor at the Uzanbazar fish market told GPlus, “Fish prices vary based on their size. Small Barali costs around ₹600-700, while larger ones can range from ₹1000 to ₹1200.”

Regarding the higher prices on Uruka compared to other days, a customer shared with GPlus, “Fish prices are high for Uruka. I bought a Barali for ₹700, which seems like a fair price for today.”

As Bhogali Bihu approaches, people in Guwahati are preparing for the traditional burning of the Meiji on Tuesday morning, praying for prosperity and well-being in the year ahead.
