First-time TMC MP Mahua Moitra’s speech wins plaudits

GUWAHATI: Mahua Moitra, of the opposition Trinamool Congress Party (TMC), made a fiery speech in the Lok Sabha on June 25. The speech has now become the most trending topic on social media.

In her maiden speech, Moitra listed the “danger signs of early fascism in India”, which won the hearts of millions and even secured the attention of the international media.

Moitra said that she "humbly accepted the mandate" in favour of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), adding "dissent is all the more important" today.

She also said that dissent was important as there was no "natural checks and balances in the Lok Sabha" due to the Opposition's shrunken strength and the ruling party's unprecedented numbers.

"It is the very nature of the overwhelmingness of this mandate, of the totality of this mandate, that makes it necessary for us to be heard today, for the voice of dissent to be heard today," she said.

Moitra spoke about issues like dissent, religious freedom, and media control. She said that the Constitution, which each member of the House has "sworn to protect", is "under threat today".
