FIR Lodged Against Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra In Jorhat

GUWAHATI: An FIR has been filed against Rahul Gandhi’s “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra” and its chief organiser, KB Byju, for allegedly deviating from its authorised route within Jorhat town.

Official sources said a suo moto FIR has been registered at Jorhat Sadar Police Station against the Yatra and its chief organiser.

Speaking to GPlus, an official of the Jorhat Sadar police station confirmed that it was a suo moto FIR. The sections are 120(B)/115(II)/143/147/188/283/323/353 read with Section 3 of PDPP Act.

The FIR claimed the “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra” took an unexpected turn within the town, contrary to the permitted route towards KB Road, resulting in a "chaotic situation" and causing some people to fall due to the sudden rush, creating a stampede-like scenario.

The FIR specified that the Yatra failed to adhere to the district administration's norms and violated road safety regulations.

Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, told media that the FIR is an attempt to create unnecessary obstacles for the Yatra.

Saikia highlighted the absence of police managing traffic diversion and justified the deviation due to the assigned route being too small for the massive gathering.

The Leader of the Opposition accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of fearing the Yatra's success on its first day in Assam and is all out to derail it.

The 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,' led by Congress MP KB Byju, commenced on January 14 from Manipur and is scheduled to continue in Assam until January 25.

Covering 833 km across 17 districts in Assam, the Yatra is part of a larger journey spanning 6,713 km in 67 days, passing through 110 districts in 15 states, with the final destination set for Mumbai on March 20.
