Final Phase Of Polling For Lok Sabha Elections Underway In Assam

 

GUWAHATI: The third and final phase of polling for Lok Sabha elections in Assam began at 7 am on Tuesday, May 7, with polling centres in Guwahati witnessing early queues of electors armed with umbrellas and raincoats to escape the light drizzle.

Speaking to GPlus at the Narbam LP School , Barsajai, polling centre, early bird Luhit Chandra Haloi, said, "The weather is indeed turning out to be a hurdle, but residents have queued up once 5 AM for their democratic rights. Now the crowd is less. But, I am sure it'll increase."

Kopil Bora, actor, said, "Weather is not in our favour, but the citizens are not backing out from performing their duties. It is their vote and decision which will be instrumental in carrying forward the democratic process and the uplift of the society."

Congress candidate Mira Borthakur, after casting her vote, said , "I am thankful to the citizens who have showed up despite such weather conditions. I extend my request to the rest to exercise their right and pray to 'Maa Kamakhya' that the condition further improves."

On the other hand, BJP candidate Bijuli Kalita Medhi cast her vote at Pub Guwahati High School in Jyotinagar. 

She said she had sought the blessings of ‘Baba Bajrangbali’ and ‘Maa Ugratara’ before coming to vote. 

“ I will now visit other polling centres and speak to voters,” she said while calling upon the people to come out and vote in large numbers for a healthy democracy.

Borthakur and Medhi are the key contenders for the prestigious Guwahati Lok Sabha seats .

The three other constituencies where voting is underway are Kokrajhar (ST), Dhubri and Barpeta.

With the weather forecast predicting scattered rain, voter turnout percentage might fluctuate but the spirit of democracy stands tall.
