GUWAHATI: An exclusive Chess Playing Zone was inaugurated at Nehru Park, Panbazar, Guwahati on Wednesday. The ceremony was graced by the presence of International Chess Master Atanu Lahiri.
The inauguration ceremony also witnessed the attendance of key dignitaries, including Narayan Deka, Chairman of GMDA (Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority), Mukuta Deka, Vice Chairman of GMDA, Anbamuthan, Member of Parliament, the CEO of GMDA, Biswajit Bharadwaj, and Manali Jain, International Chess Arbiter. Also present were Nandan Buragohain, Secretary of Assam Chess Club, and Manali Jain, Secretary of GMDA.
The Chess Playing Zone at Nehru Park will be accessible to the public every day, providing a welcoming space for chess players of all skill levels.
In an effort to further enhance the chess community, the Assam Chess Club announced that they will conduct training sessions every Sunday at the newly inaugurated Chess Playing Arena.
During the ceremony, International Chess Master Atanu Lahiri expressed his enthusiasm for the development of chess in the region, emphasising the cognitive and strategic benefits the game offers.
Narayan Deka, Chairman of GMDA, spoke about the importance of promoting intellectual sports like chess and its positive impact on the community.
