GUWAHATI: An elderly couple residing in the Chandan Nagar area of Beltola, Guwahati, was brutally murdered at their residence on Monday night, October 26.

The couple has been identified as Noni Gopal Baruah, age 87, and Mina Baruah, age 76. They have two daughters, one in England and the other one in Mumbai. As such, a caretaker named Akash Choudhury and his wife have been residing with them in Guwahati for the last 18-20 years.

Preliminary investigation on the case reveals that the house was broken into through the window. Personal items in the house were all scattered around and the wardrobe was found broken as well. The bodies were found lying on the bed and an eye witness reportedly observed head injuries on them.

The caretaker discovered the dead bodies at around 7 AM today morning and informed the Dispur police.

As of now, senior-level officials are at the murder scene investigating the matter. No one has been allowed inside the room where the crime was committed. A forensic investigation by the police is ongoing. Sniffer dogs have been brought in by the Police for the investigation.

"We are investigating the matter and are now doing the forensic investigation. Let us do our work and we cannot share any clues as of now because this will hamper the investigation," Commissioner of Police Harmeet Singh told G Plus.

Meanwhile, locals have questioned the security of the locality and have alleged the lack of police patrolling in the bylanes of the area in Guwahtai. Residents have claimed that the couple was really friendly with everyone.

"The miscreants who committed the crime might have known the elderly couple, otherwise they would not have killed them," a local resident said.
