ED Accuses Arvind Kejriwal Of Consuming Sugary Foods In Jail To Get Bail

GUWAHATI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) informed a Delhi Court that Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, who claims to be diabetic, has been consuming mangoes, sweets, and tea with sugar, while in jail. Zoheb Hossain, special counsel for the ED, alleged that Kejriwal's consumption of sugary foods contradicts his claim of high sugar levels and appears to be a ploy to secure bail in the money laundering case against him.

During the hearing before Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, Hossain argued that Kejriwal's request to consult his regular doctor through virtual conferencing, citing fluctuating blood sugar levels, was dubious given his dietary choices in jail. Kejriwal's application seeking permission to consult his regular doctor was subsequently withdrawn, with advocate Vivek Jain representing Kejriwal informing the court that a better application would be filed.

However, Hossain raised concerns about the language used in Kejriwal's application, particularly the phrase "alarming increase in diabetic levels." The ED had sought clarification from jail authorities regarding Kejriwal's diet and medications, pointing out that despite claiming high diabetes, he was consuming foods known to elevate blood sugar levels.

Advocate Jain objected to Hossain's submissions, accusing him of playing to the media gallery. Despite the withdrawal of Kejriwal's application, the court directed Tihar jail authorities to submit a medical report on Kejriwal, including details of his diet. The matter was adjourned for further hearing on April 19 at 2 PM.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case, with his judicial custody set to expire on April 23. Kejriwal has challenged this decision in the Supreme Court, which has issued a notice on his plea but declined to grant interim relief.

The ED has accused Kejriwal of being the "kingpin" of the Delhi excise scam, alleging his direct involvement in the misappropriation of funds amounting to over Rs. 100 crores. The agency claims that Kejriwal orchestrated a conspiracy to grant extraordinary profit margins to certain private companies involved in the excise business.

Additionally, the ED alleges that Vijay Nair, acting on behalf of Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, coordinated the conspiracy. While Sisodia remains in jail, Sanjay Singh was recently granted bail by the Supreme Court.
