Durga Idols In Wraps,  Guwahati’s Artisans Pray For Clear Skies

GUWAHATI: Guwahati’s Durga idol-makers are a worried lot as they keep the unfinished idols wrapped in layers of plastic to save them from the rain. The one prayer that is on their lips is for the rain to stop so that they can complete the idols.

With rainy conditions directly impacting the hallmark of craftsmanship, artisans fear it may degrade the quality of idol-making in the long run. “Rain impacts the craftsmanship,” an artisan from Lachit Nagar told G Plus. “If we can’t put the idols out under the sun, it affects the quality of the colouring. As a result, the idols do not glaze as much as we aspire them to be.”

He further went on to share that orders are not impacted by the sudden downpour, but delivering them on time becomes the harder thing to accomplish. “In heavy rain, it becomes difficult to transport them in vehicles. We hope for clear skies in the coming days.”

As the final tides of monsoon enter this week, artisans fear that prolonged damp weather may dilute their business dealings with customers. For the moment, they are banking on improved weather conditions to complete all the orders and make the deliveries.

The last forecast by the India Meteorological Department had predicted rain in Guwahati till October 4.
