GUWAHATI: The illegal dumping of construction materials on public streets has become a persistent issue in Guwahati, causing widespread inconvenience and posing safety hazards to residents and commuters. Piles of sand, gravel, bricks, and debris are frequently spotted on roadsides, obstructing traffic and narrowing pathways meant for pedestrians.

Areas such as Ulubari, Beltola, Ganeshguri, and Maligaon are among the most affected, with construction materials left unattended for days or even weeks. This not only disrupts the smooth flow of traffic but also contributes to dust pollution, making the air quality worse for nearby residents.
Talking to GPlus, Ankit Das, a local resident of Ulubari said, “This affects everyone. Roads are public property, and no one has the right to misuse them like this.”
Speaking to GPlus, Mrigen Sarania, Mayor of GMC said, “We ensure that proper fines are imposed and steps are taken if any such instances are witnessed. We also encourage the people to report such activities to us, and at times we also take away the construction materials which are blocking the roads or causing nuisance for the residents.”
Citizens are urging the authorities to implement clear guidelines for construction projects, including designated dumping zones and fines for violators. Immediate action could help curb this growing problem and ensure that Guwahati’s streets remain safe and accessible for all.
