GUWAHATI: Debasish Borthakur, an Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer from the 2019 batch and serving as the Circle Officer of Rangia, Kamrup, was detained by police on Monday,  November 18, for violating traffic laws allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

The incident occurred near the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where Borthakur's vehicle was found parked in the middle of the road, obstructing traffic flow. Witnesses reported that the officer appeared visibly intoxicated and resisted attempts by traffic police to address the situation.

According to the police, Borthakur, originally from Biswanath, not only ignored directives but also attempted to lecture the traffic personnel on protocol. His unruly behaviour prompted the intervention of Bhangagarh police, who detained him and escorted him to the Bhangagarh police station.

A Breath Analyser Test conducted at the station revealed a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 194 mg/100 ml, far exceeding the legal limit of 30 mg/100 ml. Sources indicated that the officer initially resisted undergoing a medical examination but was later subjected to further health checks.

"According to traffic violations, certain actions were taken against him, and he was later released," a police official from Bhangagarh station told GPlus.

After the recent unruly behaviour of a policeman in Fancy Bazar, the public have called for stricter enforcement measures and disciplinary action against officials found flouting the law. As the incident continues to attract condemnation, questions remain about the efficacy of holding public servants accountable for such breaches of conduct.
