‘Droonam’ Anti-Drone Technology Deployed In Manipur Amid New Threat From Sky

GUWAHATI: In response to increasing drone threats in Manipur, the Assam Rifles (AR) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have enhanced security measures by deploying advanced anti-drone technology. The forces are reportedly utilising the 'Dronaam' system, developed by Gurutvaa Systems Pvt Ltd, to counter rogue drones in the region.

Sharmukh Mukherjee, head of the global supply chain at Gurutvaa Systems, discussed the Dronaam system's capabilities during the 2nd Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation in Delhi. He stated that Dronaam, which has been in operation with Indian security forces for the last two to three years, has demonstrated success in neutralising drone threats within an eight-kilometer range and over one hour of battery life.

"Dronaam offers a soft-kill solution, effectively neutralising incoming drone attacks," Mukherjee said.
The system is currently used by the Indian Air Force, Border Security Force (BSF), and Army. In light of recent drone attacks in Manipur, Dronaam has been deployed by security forces to address the escalating threat.

The Assam Rifles was the first to introduce anti-drone systems in Manipur to tackle rogue drones, and the CRPF has followed by testing and deploying additional anti-drone guns in the state. The Manipur Police confirmed the increased use of these systems via a post on X, stating, “AR has deployed anti-drone systems in border areas to counter rogue drones. The CRPF has tested and provided one system to forces in the state, with more anti-drone guns on the way."

The state police are also in the process of acquiring additional anti-drone systems to strengthen security further.

The surge in violence in the region has been marked by recent attacks attributed to suspected Kuki militants. On Saturday, long-range rockets targeted two civilian areas, killing a 78-year-old man, RK Rabei, and injuring six others in Bishnupur, according to Manipur Police. The attack also reportedly destroyed three bunkers in Churachandpur.
