The marathon, held at an elevation of 9,000 feet in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang, coincides with UN Flag Day. The theme for this year’s event is “Run for Global Peace,” which is of relevance in the world’s ongoing turbulent times.

This year’s marathon offers a prize pool of ₹60 lakhs, a significant increase from the previous edition, reflecting the growing prestige of the event. The announcement was made by the Arunachal Pradesh Government on July 4, and registrations opened on July 10, via the official website, with the state’s Chief Minister being the first to register.

The marathon, organised jointly by the Arunachal Pradesh government and the Indian Army, is part of the state’s annual calendar of events. It aims to foster sportsmanship and a competitive spirit among participants, challenging their endurance against the region’s demanding terrain and thin atmosphere. The event also highlights the hospitality of the local Monpa community, the Indian Army, and the Tawang Administration, all of whom are preparing to welcome participants with traditional warmth.

To promote the marathon, three promotional runs have already been held in Delhi, Shillong, and Guwahati, and awareness stalls were set up in Hyderabad and Satara. A dedicated YouTube channel (tawangmarathon.com) is set to launch soon, providing real-time updates and further engaging the running community.
