Meghalaya Seeks UNESCO World Heritage Status For Living Root Bridges

 

GUWAHATI: A delegation from Meghalaya, led by Art and Culture Minister Paul Lyngdoh, made a compelling case in Paris for the state’s iconic living root bridges to be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The team had presented their nomination to Ernesto Ottone, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General, emphasising the bridges' unique cultural and environmental significance.

Lyngdoh underlined them as symbols of Meghalaya's deep commitment to nature conservation and cultural preservation. "This nomination reflects our dedication to global cultural and educational cooperation," he stated.

The delegation met with Simona-Mirela Miculescu, President of UNESCO's 42nd General Conference, to strengthen ties and explore further collaboration. India's Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Vishal V. Sharma, was also present with the delegation, as it was warmly received by senior UNESCO officials.

The visit included a tour of the UNESCO Archives, offering insights into the history of international intellectual cooperation.
