Dog Survives Leopard Attack in Guwahati’s Tetelia Hillside

GUWAHATI: A dog was attacked by a Leopard in the Tetelia Hillside area last night around 10 pm. The dog was a white German Spitz named Bogeshwar who was rescued in the nick of time after being attacked by the big cat.

“The dog usually stays inside the house but yesterday night he went out to the garden. The leopard had probably been eyeing him for a long time and attacked him last night when he went out alone in the garden,” said Anjan Das, the caregiver and owner of the dog.

According to the resident, the menace of leopards is not new in the area as many other such cases of leopards coming out of the wild into residential areas have occurred frequently.

“My younger brother came out of the house when he heard our dog scream and warded off the animal. But the leopard had already caught hold of our dog and was trying to pull him away,” he narrated.

Bogeshwar was taken to a veterinarian just past midnight where he was given painkillers and his treatment was begun.

“At around 12:30, I got a call from the dog owner and I asked him to bring the dog to me. I immediately started his Anti Rabies Vaccination, as Rabies can directly be transmitted from wild animals. I also gave him Tetanus and antibiotics to heal his wounds,” said said Dr. Arindam Bezbarua, the vetenarian who treated Bogeshwar.

"The dog will have to continue the course of antibiotics for about 5 days to heal the deep wounds that he has sustained. In addition to this, I also gave an ointment for the dog and asked the owner to ensure that he gets enough rest at home," the doctor added.
