On Monday, a taxi carrying 3 dogs, all tied up in bags was spotted in Jowai. The dogs are suspected to originate from East jaintia hills and being carried to Aizawl. Allegedly, were being illegally smuggled to be sold for Dog meat worth around Rs 500.

Animal rights activists from Guwahati and Shillong and Jowai, along with police busted the racket. The operation was headed by Lady SI Kiran Lyngdoh and SP N Lamare from Khliehriat police station. Upon further interrogation, the police rescued a total of 26 dogs – all dehydrated, hurt, wailing and in mental trauma.

"We were looking for 3 dogs and ended up rescuing 26 tied and gagged dogs. They are scared and in need of immediate medical attention," informed an animal rights activist from Guwahati.

“The dogs are with us right now, but we’re having problems with their accommodation because in police station, there’s no such arrangement. An activist from Jowai, Kongka Passah has also come to the police station and is arranging for the accommodation,” Lyngdoh informed G Plus. She further added that this is the first time such a case has been reported.
