Doctor Allegedly Flees After Patient Dies During Abortion In Karimganj

GUWAHATI: A woman lost her life during an abortion procedure, allegedly due to incorrect treatment at the Karimganj Civil Hospital on February 9. The doctor who was operating on the woman soon escaped the hospital premise after locking the Operation Theatre.

The situation escalated when her family, concerned about the prolonged operation, discovered that the operating surgeon, Ashish Kumar Biswas, and his team had fled the operation theatre.

The victim identified to be Usha Barman, a resident of Sarisha in the Karimganj district, had arrived at the hospital accompanied by ASHA workers for the abortion procedure. Dr Ashish Kumar Biswas initiated the operation in the evening, but as time passed without any improvement, an ASHA worker informed the family about the situation.

Upon the family's arrival, they were shocked to find the operation theatre locked, and the doctor and nurses missing. Breaking into the room, they discovered Usha Barman's lifeless body.

The situation got intense at the hospital which prompted intervention from the authorities at the Karimganj Sadar Police Station to restore order.

The family of the deceased has accused Ashish Kumar Biswas and his team of negligence.

Talking to GPlus, a senior police official of Karimganj said, “The doctor escaped after witnessing the situation heating up. The ASHA workers have also demanded relief money in lieu of the event. We are looking into the case.”
