According to reports, chairman of the now defunct Dibrugarh Municipal Board, Saikat Patra, has been appointed Mayor of Dibrugarh city.

According to 2011 Census, Dibrugarh had a population of 1,326,335 while Guwahati City recorded 962,334 people.

The decision comes after receiving a proposal from the District Commissioner (DC) of Dibrugarh, dated October 7, 2023, seeking the inclusion of 22 ward areas in the proposed Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation.

Following the proposal, a notification for the constitution of the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation was published on November 20, 2023, under sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022. Objections were invited from the inhabitants of the respective city or town and panchayat areas under sub-section (4) of section 3 of the said Act.
