Defying SC ban, Buffalo Fights still continue in Assam

GUWAHATI: The people of Gumutha, Nagaon district and Ahotguri, Morigaon district had organised traditional buffalo fights to celebrate Magh Bihu, defying a Supreme Court ban on bull-fighting.

In Ahotguri, approximately 15 buffaloes took part in the buffalo fight competition. An organiser from the Gumutha buffalo fight said that farmers of the region believe that insects enter the forehead of buffaloes during this season and disturb them. When buffalos fight, these insects die. The animals are made to fight because this way, they can let off steam, otherwise, they may attack anyone at any time.

Traditional norms have included buffalo-fights, cock-fights and bulbul-fights during the festival of Magh Bihu. However, after the Supreme Court’s 2014 ban on such activities, it has made these celebrations very uncertain.
