Deadline for finalisation of Assam NRC will not be extended: SC

GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday, May 8 gave a verdict saying that the deadline for finalisation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam will not be extended from July 31.

Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RF Nariman have given Prateek Hajela, Assam NRC coordinator, liberties to deal with claims and objections of persons against wrong exclusion or inclusion of names in the NRC.

This direction came after the coordinator informed the judges that many people who had objected to the inclusion of certain individuals in the draft NRC were not coming forward before panels dealing with these complaints.

Earlier in February, the Supreme Court had questioned the Centre for obstructing the NRC process when the Ministry of Home Affairs sought a plea to stall the NRC work for two weeks when Central Armed Police Forces were required for election duty.

The draft Assam NRC was published on July 30, 2018 in which 2.89 crore names were missing, the names of 40,70,707 people’s name did not make it to the least. Of these, 37,59,630 names have been rejected and 2,48,077 are on hold.

The court has now allowed claimants for Assam NRC to rely on and submit five documents, NRC of 1951, voter list of 1966, voter list of 1971, refugee registration certificate till 1971 and ration card issued till 1971, which were earlier objected to by the NRC coordinator.
