GUWAHATI: Widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning, thunderstorms, and strong winds are very likely to lash the state on Sunday and Monday, under the influence of cyclone Remal which is predicted to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal by Saturday morning.

This will also likely affect Guwahati with rainfall lashing the city on May 26 and 27.
According to the latest forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal by May 24.
Subsequently, it is likely to further intensify into a cyclonic storm over the East-central Bay of Bengal by May 25 morning, before moving nearly northwards towards Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts. As a result of this system, widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected across Assam.
With thunderstorms and heavy rainfall expected towards the end of this week and the start of the new week ahead, this may be a well-needed respite from the heat wave sweeping across Guwahati and the state. The city recorded the second-highest temperature of the season at 38.2 degrees Celsius, and the lowest of almost 27 degrees Celsius on Thursday, May 23. Continual heat is expected over the next few days with occasional relief from the expected rain and thunderstorm.
