GUWAHATI: Assam and Meghalaya are to experience light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy showers at a few places over its western districts on 21st May, as per a circular released by the India Meteorological Department’s Earth System Science Organisation (Ministry of Earth Sciences) today.
Cyclone Amphan (pronounced UM-PUN) in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm.

In the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain/ thundershower is very likely to occur at a few places across the North east region.
MET department has also issued warnings of thunderstorm with lightning, likely to occur at isolated places over the entire region.
A warning has been issued for West Bengal and North Odisha coasts as the cyclone strengthens over adjoining central parts of South Bay of Bengal moving north-westwards with maximum sustained wind speed of 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph.
It is very likely to move nearly northwards for some time and then north-northeastwards across northwest Bay of Bengal and cross West Bengal – Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) by 20th May 2020.
The cyclone is expected to further intensify into a super cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours, says the Met department.
