GUWAHATI: Acting on directives from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a late-night joint crackdown was carried out in Guwahati to rein in illegal dumper operations—a growing concern after a string of fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles across the city.
The drive, conducted jointly by the Guwahati Police and the Transport Department, focused on key city zones where dumpers frequently operate without proper documentation or safety measures.
As part of the crackdown, authorities conducted thorough checks on dumpers operating during nighttime hours. According to official data compiled on April 12, a total of 94 dumpers were inspected. Out of these, 17 vehicles were found to be in violation of various laws and safety norms.
Offence-wise breakdown includes:
-Without seat belt: 2 cases
-Without number plate: 2 cases
-Drunken driving: 3 cases
-Operating without challan: 3 cases
-Without valid pollution certificate: 2 cases
-Driving without a license (DL): 2 cases
-Overloading: 3 cases
Action taken by the authorities:
-Non-FIR cases sent to court: 6
-E-challans issued: 6
-Vehicles detained: 3
-Driving Licenses seized: 2
Several dumpers lacking valid permits or paperwork were penalised on the spot. Officials emphasised that these vehicles not only operate outside the bounds of regulation but also pose a serious risk to road safety due to negligent and unsafe driving practices.
