COVID-19 Impact: Fruit Prices Skyrocket in Guwahati Markets

GUWAHATI: Due to the restrictions and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Guwahatians are feeling the pinch of price rise as the retail rates of fruits have skyrocketed, especially in the Fancy Bazar daily market.

"The retail price has been changing everyday because of the COVID-19 situation and the restrictions in place. We are selling Apple (Kashmiri) for Rs 250-280 per kg, Apple (Bilati) for Rs 350-360 per kg, Mango (Langda) for Rs 150/kg, for Mosambi we are charging a minimum amount of Rs 140 per kg, Pomegranate for Rs 150-180 (small & medium sizes) and around Rs 200 for large size, Malta for Rs 180/kg, Cantaloupe (Muskmelon) for Rs 40-45 per kg and so on," a fruit stall owner from Fancy Bazar told G Plus.

Similarly, retail shops in the Chandmari and Ganeshguri area have also asserted that the increase in prices is a result of the partial lockdown in the state, which has resulted in an increase of demand.

"We buy fresh fruits everyday for our stall from Fancy Bazar, there has been an increase in the retail prices due to COVID. However, the prices in the wholesale market remain unchanged. We have bought a bag of Pomegranate for Rs 1300 which easily contains 9-10 kgs, similarly a bag of Mosambi would also cost the same, a dozen of bananas would cost around Rs 100, watermelon for Rs 30-35 per kg, mangos for 100/kg, avocado for Rs 200-220/kg, cherry plum for Rs 600/kg, papaya for Rs 80-90/kg, coconut for Rs 35-40 per piece, etc" a juice stall owner in Chandmari area told G Plus.
