GUWAHATI: At least 22 tea plantation workers have died from drinking toxic bootleg liquor in Halmira tea estate with several hospitalised in Golaghat, Assam.

“Around 100 people drank the country liquor on Thursday evening at Halmira tea estate and people are still falling ill and being brought to the hospital,” said BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia of Khumtai constituency.

Dozens more are being treated in local hospitals, with fear that the death toll could rise.

Deaths from illegally produced alcohol, known locally as hooch or country liquor, are common in India.
