GUWAHATI: The students of Cotton University protested against the university’s plans to introduce uniforms on June 24.

The university had decided to introduce uniforms for the students studying in higher secondary courses from August 1 this year.

The protesting students held placards and gathered in the university premises to express their discontent over the university’s plans.

“There are bigger problems which the administration should be looking at like teacher’s shortage and unfilled vacancy. Making uniforms compulsory will not guarantee better results for students,” informed a student of the university.

He added that one unique feature of the university is that students belonging to different communities showcase their cultural diversity through their clothes.

The students strongly opposed the administration’s decision to bring in uniforms and also submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor regarding the same.

If implemented, this will be the first time the students will wear uniform in the history of the 119-year old institute.
