GUWAHATI: In a decision that has drawn widespread attention and raised concerns, Assam Police Service (APS) officer Rumir Timungpi has been appointed as the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) at the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Timungpi's appointment has stirred controversy due to her previous involvement in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-job scandal.
The appointment notice designates Timungpi to serve as the Additional Superintendent of Police at the NIA on a deputation basis for a period spanning three years.
Even though the notice has been issued on August 11, the matter only came to light on Monday.
The selection of Timungpi, however, has not been without its share of criticism, as she gained notoriety for her alleged role in the APSC scandal.
Rumir Timungpi's name had surfaced during the investigations carried out by a judicial commission chaired by retired judge Biplab Sarma.
The commission delved into the cash-for-job scam of 2013, unearthing a web of allegations involving 21 officers from Assam Civil Services and Assam Police Services who were in active service at the time. Among this group, Timungpi was implicated as one of the officers allegedly entangled in the scandal.
Throughout the APSC scandal, several accusations were leveled against Timungpi, casting a shadow over her professional conduct and integrity.
