Claims Of Improper Body Checks of Women Candidates For Assam Recruitment Exam, DGP Orders Probe

 

GUWAHATI: Assam Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh, has ordered an inquiry into allegations of inappropriate physical checks of women candidates during the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination (ADRE) for Grade III posts on September 15, 2024.

"Reference complaint of overreach by women police personnel during checking of women candidates at Nalbari during recruitment examination – Range DIG has been directed to enquire into the matter,” Singh posted on X. “Since the Range DIG Central Western Range and the District Commissioner and District Superintendent of Police of Nalbari are all women, the factual position would be known in quick time for further action."

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was also quick to address the incident, stating that the integrity of the exam must not be compromised under any circumstances. Taking to X, he said, “I spoke with the DGP, Assam, @gpsinghips and instructed him to investigate the incident where a girl student has alleged that a lady constable searched her private parts before she entered the examination hall. For me, the dignity and respect of our mothers and sisters are of utmost importance and non-negotiable.”

The incident occurred at Swahid Smriti Senior Secondary School in Belsor, Nalbari sparking outrage after a candidate took to Facebook to share her sordid experience.

"They put their hands inside our undergarments to check,” shared the candidate, “which is disgraceful. Though only women were present, the way we were touched was unacceptable."

In a related development, the DGP also mentioned of an FIR being registered at North Lakhimpur Police Station, where cheating material papers were allegedly seized from a women’s undergarments.
