GUWAHATI: City police on Monday, September 16 launched a drive in Chandmari area of Guwahati to identify unauthorised tenants.

According to reports, a team from Chandmari and Geetanagar police station launched a drive and identified 91 tenants who were staying in rented premises in Maila Tanki area in Bhaskar Nagar locality without proper verification papers.

Speaking to G Plus, officer-in-charge of Chandmari police, Mridul Borah said, "We are working in collaboration with Geetanagar police and launched the drive in Maila Tanki area. We called the tenants and owners to the police station and provided them with tenant verification forms and explained the details required while residing in a rented house."

"Owners have allegedly said that they always ask their tenants to provide identify proofs and other details, however, they fail to collect it later," Borah added.

It is to be mentioned that as the locality in Bhaskar Nagar covers a huge area, for now only Maila Tanki area has been identified. But, the drive will continue across the entire region, informed the officer.

Meanwhile, the drive against unauthorised tenants has been initiated in all areas across the city and all the respective police stations will be conducting the drive.

The tenant and servant verification aims to detect criminal background, if any, and also to maintain a database of people living under a certain vicinity.
