GUWAHATI: In an initiative led by the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam, in collaboration with the Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission and the Assam State Urban Livelihoods Mission, over 40 lakh women members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Assam took a pledge on April 10.

This achievement earned them a place in the India Book of Records for the largest pledge-taking event by SHG members on a single day, coinciding with the forthcoming General Election to Lok Sabha, 2024.

The initiative aimed not only to uphold India's democratic traditions but also to ensure the integrity of free, fair, and peaceful elections.
Additionally, it sought to enhance electoral participation, focusing on both quantity and quality, through the effective implementation of the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program, an initiative of the Election Commission of India.
Under the guidance of the SHG member 'Sarathi Baideo', help desks were set up at various government outlets in consultation with District Administration and District Election Offices to facilitate the pledge-taking process.
An adjudicator from the India Book of Records, Narvijay Yadav, verified the procedure during a meeting at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer in Dispur. He announced the successful completion of the pledge-taking event and presented the certificate to Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel. Also present at the meeting were Mission Director Masanda Pertin of Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission, Joint CEO Pankaj Chakravarty, and Emily Baruah.
