GUWAHATI: Guwahati's shops and business establishments have shut down today in response to the call for Vyapar Bandh by the Assam Chamber of Commerce.

Earlier, the Assam Chamber of Commerce (ACC) had appealed to the business community of the state to observe a one-day Vyapar Bandh (trade bandh) on March 23 from 6 AM to 9 PM.

Although the All India Professionals’ Congress (AIPC) through a press release expressed that the move will create a panic situation in the state and will encourage black marketing which will result in price rise of essential commodities due to short supply, business establishments in and around Guwahati saw a blanket closure of shops, wine shops included.

Reports from Panbazar, Hatigaon, Gansehguri, GS Road and also Fancy Bazar have come that most of the commercial establishment are supporting the Assam Chamber of Commerce's appeal.

Banks however are open even as ATMs are fast drying out and messages are being sent by govt run banks to use digital transactions as branches are facing shortage of staff.
