A city based NGO 'Animals Need Importance Mercy Aid Love & Shelter, better known as ANIMALS, is working to make Guwahati a rabies free city.

The team members vaccinate the stray dogs of Guwahati and provide a collar leash with a unique identity to each dog. The leash will have a database with the details of the dog's health condition and a helpline number to contact when required.

The team has already completed the vaccination process with the stray dogs of Gandhi Basti, Ulubari, Silpukhuri and Chandmari Colony under Phase AA; Khanapara area under Phase AB; and Dighalipukhuri and Uzan Bazar under the Phase AC.

The team is also committed to give a 'Glow in the Dark' collar straps to the dogs which will glow at night once light falls on them. The initiative has been taken to prevent accidents of dogs during the night hours.

Speaking to G Plus, Gunajit Mazumdar, President of ANIMALS said, "Guwahat is home to about 60,000 stray dogs, and around 1-3% dogs in NE Indian are affected with rabies. We plan to make the city rabies free; we rescue, provide treatment and arrange shelter for the distressed animals."
