Chaos Under Ulubari Flyover, Space Not Properly Used

GUWAHATI: The Bishnuram Medhi Flyover commonly known as the Ulubari flyover which is meant to provide relief for traffic congestion, has become a bone of contention for the locals owing to the various problems ailing the residents and hence barring the proper usage of it.

A parking space has been designated underneath the flyover by the GMC, providing a convenient solution for commuters seeking a safe spot for their vehicles. However, the parking space is apparently utilised by people belonging to particular organisations whose offices are located nearby, while the general public is left to navigate the chaotic and congested streets.

Speaking to Hiren Deka, an auto driver from the Ulubari auto-stand, highlighted that the area suffers from a lack of adequate parking facilities, leading to frequent congestion issues.

According to Deka, Ulubari faces a significant challenge when it comes to finding suitable parking spots. He also mentioned that this is also a significant reason why there is traffic in the areas.

Additionally, the Underneath of the flyover is covered in a layer of sludge and water. Due to this, people refrain from parking their vehicles and this leaves a stench during summer.

The state of flyover underneath is also in a very dilapidated state because despite having two public toilets, desperate individuals resort to relieving themselves underneath the structure, further tarnishing the flyover's reputation and highlighting the overall neglect of public amenities.

A food stall owner, sitting underneath the flyover in terms of anonymity has said, "We own a food stall in this premise but people don't want to come to our place to eat, because of the stench. During the summers it's terrible."

Amit Burgohain, owner of a shop beside the flyover said, "This is truly shameful as people still don't utilise the spot properly despite the local municipality having built two toilets."

Speaking in his regard Tulsi Ranjan, the Collector of GMC said, “Regarding the toilets, the best we can do is to create awareness and urge people to use the public facilities provided to them. Also regarding the parking, it has always been an issue but we cannot owe it only to that.”
