The government of India has informed the Supreme Court (SC) regarding the need to curb web-based digital media in an affidavit.

"There is absolutely no check on the web-based digital media. Apart from spreading venomous hatred, deliberate and intended instigation to not only cause violence but even terrorism it is also capable of indulging in tarnishing the image of individuals and institutions. The said practice is, in fact, rampant," said the government in an affidavit.

In the affidavit given by the Central Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to the Supreme Court of India, the Centre has urged the apex court to regulate digital media by laying down guidelines before regulating electronic media or TV.

“While in a mainstream media, the publication/telecast is a one-time act, the digital media has faster reach from a wider range of viewership/readership and has the potential to become viral,” said the Centre
