Centre Introduces Time Of Day Tariff And Simplified Smart Metering Rules To Empower Consumers

GUWAHATI: The Central Government of India has made significant amendments to the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020, aimed at revolutionising the power sector and empowering consumers which include the newly introduced provisions include the Time of Day (ToD) tariff and simplified smart metering rules, enabling consumers to reduce their electricity bills while facilitating more efficient utilisation of resources within the power system, as of a press release on June 23.

Under the amended regulations, consumers will now have the opportunity to take advantage of the ToD tariff, which offers a substantial 20% reduction in power tariff during solar hours. This encourages consumers to utilise electricity during the day when solar energy production is at its peak. In contrast, during peak hours when demand is high, the power tariff will be increased by 10% to 20%. This dynamic pricing system aims to incentivise consumers to shift their electricity usage to non-peak hours, reducing strain on the power grid and optimising resource allocation.

Union Power and NRE Minister, R. K. Singh, emphasised that the introduction of the ToD tariff is a win-win situation for both consumers and the power system. By utilising electricity during solar hours, consumers can significantly reduce their electricity bills, promoting cost savings. Additionally, the power system benefits from better resource management, allowing for more efficient utilisation of energy sources.

The amended rules also include the simplification of smart metering regulations, which play a vital role in implementing the ToD tariff. Smart meters provide real-time data on electricity consumption, allowing consumers to monitor their usage patterns and make informed decisions about when to use electricity. With simplified smart metering rules, consumers can easily adapt to the ToD tariff and effectively manage their electricity consumption.

Furthermore, Union Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister R. K. Singh emphasised that these amendments contribute to better grid integration of renewable energy sources and foster a faster energy transition for India. By promoting the use of solar energy during peak hours, the power system can rely less on conventional power sources and reduce carbon emissions, aligning with the nation's commitment to sustainable development.
