GUWAHATI: Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan has directed the Assam government to prepare a detailed feasibility report on utilising 271 wetlands for flood water diversion by December 2024. His directive came during his two-day visit to Assam on November 5 and 6.

According to reports, this initiative is expected to cost approximately ₹500 crore, as it aims to rejuvenate Assam’s depleted wetlands and connect them for effective flood water storage, a senior official disclosed on Thursday.
Mohan reportedly held review meetings on law and order, border management with Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, flood control, and the status of various tribal councils.
He offered specific attention to the state’s progress on flood mitigation strategies, specifically focusing on the role of wetlands in controlling water levels in the Brahmaputra River.
In the initial phase, the Water Resources Department (WRD) had identified nine wetlands across seven districts, estimating a project cost of ₹380.60 crore for this segment alone.
Now, additional funding from the central government was reportedly sought to expand the scope of this project.
