Centre confirms Arjuna Award for Hima Das

GUWAHATI: Assam’s golden girl, Hima Das will be conferred with Arjuna Awards on 25th September, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan by President, Ram Nath Kovind.

Hima’s name figures at number 3 in the list of 20 Arjuna awardees prepared by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

Hima will receive a statuette, certificate and cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh from the Govt of India at a special function in New Delhi.

18-year-old Hima, won one gold and two silver medals at the recently held Asian Games and previously, a gold at the women’s 400m final race in the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland.

The Ministry for Youth Affairs and Sports on Thursday, released the complete list of sportspersons to be awarded with National Sports Awards under the categories:

• Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna 2018, 
• Dronacharya Awards 2018, 
• Arjuna Awards 2018, 
• Dhyan Chand Award 2018, 
• Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar 2018 and 
• Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy 2017-18.

National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is given for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four year, Arjuna Award is given for consistency outstanding performance for four years, Dronacharya Award for coaches for producing medal winners at prestigious International sports events, Dhyan Chand Award for life time contribution to sports development and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar  is given to the corporate entities (both in private and public sector) and individuals who have played a visible role in the area of sports promotion and development. Overall top performing university in inter-university tournaments is given Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy.
