GUWAHATI: The central government has approved ₹1186.20 crore for the four-laning of a 13-km stretch of NH-37 from Silchar (near Budha Nagar) in Assam to Jiribam in Manipur. This was announced by Union Road Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday, March 28.

"This corridor will significantly enhance connectivity between Meghalaya, Assam, and Manipur, providing seamless access to Manipur’s capital,” Gadkari posted on X. “The improved alignment will foster economic activities, facilitate better connectivity to essential services, and generate employment opportunities."
The minister further highlighted that the expansion will not only improve transportation but also create new economic and employment opportunities, as the improved highway will provide better access to markets, production centres, and other economic hubs, contributing to regional growth.
Strengthening transport infrastructure in the Northeast has been a key priority for the central government, with this project expected to play another role in boosting social linkages across the region.
