GUWAHATI: In context to the Assam online trading scam, alleged mastermind Bishal Phukan and his close associates Sumi Bora and her husband, Tarkik Bora, are being brought to Guwahati today under the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Phukan, a Dibrugarh-based businessman, is accused of orchestrating a multi-crore scam, deceiving hundreds of investors through a complex online trading operation that promised lucrative returns.

According to reports, Phukan and his associates are being escorted to Guwahati by a team of CBI officials from Dibrugarh, following a recent investigation into the scale and organisation of the fraudulent scheme. Prior to their transfer, all three suspects underwent medical examinations, standard procedure before detainees are moved between jurisdictions. Sources indicate that Phukan, along with the Boras, will appear before a CBI court in Guwahati on October 30.
The alleged scam involved collecting large sums from individuals across Assam, targeting both small investors and high-profile clients with promises of high returns through online trading in commodities, stocks, and cryptocurrencies. Phukan and his associates reportedly misrepresented the nature of the investments, which later turned out to be fraudulent, leaving many investors facing heavy financial losses.
According to media reports, CBI’s investigations have revealed the elaborate web of transactions and bank accounts used to divert funds from the victims into Phukan’s personal accounts and businesses operated by the Boras. Despite initial complaints from aggrieved investors, Phukan and his team managed to evade law enforcement until a more detailed probe by the CBI exposed the breadth of the deception.
The upcoming court hearing will determine the course of the investigation, with CBI officials expected to seek extended custody for detailed interrogations.
