GUWAHATI: The casting of votes in the highly anticipated Gauhati University Post Graduate Students' Union elections has commenced, with the results expected to be announced on Friday. As of now, a total of 1900 votes have been cast, reflecting active student participation in this democratic process.
The Gauhati University initiated the post-graduate students' union elections on September 21, and the candidates engaged in an open debate on September 26, from 9 AM to 3 PM. This election has witnessed intense competition, as three prominent student wings affiliated with various political parties vying for victory.
The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) is leading the charge with a robust line-up of 12 candidates, demonstrating their strong presence on campus. In contrast, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) has put forth three to four contenders, while the Satramukhi Yukti Sangram Samiti is fielding two candidates.
The candidates competing for the coveted position of President include Jintu Das from Commerce (7th Semester) and Nihar Ranjan Bhuyan from Biotechnology (3rd Semester). Meanwhile, the race for Vice President features Arif Hussain and Hritwij Thakur, both from Communication and Journalism (3rd Semester).
In the General Secretary category, Deep Darshan Kalita from Commerce (9th Semester) and Himanjit Deka from Political Science (3rd Semester) are vying for the post. Simultaneously, candidates for the Assistant General Secretary position comprise Niharika Devi from the Assamese Department (3rd Semester), Raisumai Brahma from Sociology (3rd Semester), and Ujjal Paul from English Language Teaching (1st Semester).
