Chain Snatcher Injured In Police Firing In Guwahati’s Chachal

GUWAHATI: A man identified as Ronesh Daimary, also known as Raju, was injured in police firing in Guwahati’s Chachal area on Tuesday, April 29. Daimary, a repeat offender recently released from jail on April 10, had resumed criminal activity shortly after his release. He was involved in a chain-snatching incident in the Borbari area on April 17 and is linked to at least five other similar cases across the city.

Daimary was accused of snatching a chain at gunpoint in the Jalukbari area on Tuesday, April 29. During the act, a pistol in his possession reportedly fell at the scene. A police search operation was launched, leading to the arrest of Daimary and an ally, Mohidul Hoque, alias Andar, from Nalbari.

Upon interrogation, the two admitted that another pistol used in the incidents was hidden in the Chachal area. Police teams proceeded to the location based on the information provided. According to officials, Daimary retrieved the weapon during the operation and opened fire at police personnel. In response, police returned fire, injuring Daimary in the leg. He has been admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

According to police, this is not the first time Daimary has been injured in an encounter. He was previously shot while attempting to escape from custody.

An official from Dispur Police Station told GPlus, “The accused fired at us and tried to flee while in custody. In retaliation, he was shot, got injured in his leg, and has been admitted to GMCH.”

Police confirmed that both pistols have been recovered—one from the Jalukbari incident and the other from the Chachal encounter. Multiple cases of chain snatching and burglary were registered in and around Guwahati and investigations are underway.
