CAB Protests Turn Violent in Tripura; Internet and SMS Services Suspended

GUWAHATI: In the wake of protests against the Citizenship Bill (CAB) across the northeast, the Tripura government from Tuesday afternoon suspended internet and SMS services in the state for 48 hours.

A police notification stated, "From Tuesday afternoon all internet facility in the state will be shut down for the next 48 hours. Moreover, SMS facilities will also be restricted."

It has been reported by the Director-General of Police, Tripura that rumours are being mongered about ethnic clashes between tribal and non-tribals in Manu and Kanchapur areas.

“This has created a violent situation in the area. It has been noticed that SMS, WhatsApp and social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are being widely used for transmitting fake images and videos having potential to incite violence in the state at a larger rate,” the notification added.

It is to be mentioned that the prohibition has been placed to press messages also.
