Brown-Cheeked Rail & Baillon’s Crake Spotted At Guwahati’s Deepor Beel

 

GUWAHATI: Deepor Beel, Assam’s only Ramsar site, has recently witnessed a sighting of Brown-cheeked Rail and Baillon’s Crake, adding to the rich avian diversity of the wetland. Assam’s Minister for Environment and Forests, Chandra Mohan Patowary, shared the news on X, calling it “a rare delight.”

Earlier, on January 9, the Guwahati Wildlife Division conducted the Asian Water Bird Census 2025 at Deepor Beel, recording an impressive 12,245 individual birds from 105 species. The survey, carried out using the Visual Encounter Survey methodology, saw enthusiastic participation from bird experts, student volunteers, NGO members, and officials from the Assam Forest Department.

The sighting of these species highlights the ecological significance of Deepor Beel.
