GUWAHATI: Given the results of the Panchayat elections the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has failed to increase its popularity; the results show that they are standing at the same position where they were standing during 2014 Legislative Assembly elections.
In the Panchayat elections of 2013, while just considering the Zila Parishad (ZP) member posts, out of the 420 seats, Congress had won 273 seats which is around 60 % whereas the BJP had won only 15 seats.
In 2018, according to the counting of results till 14th December, BJP has secured 181 seats out of 347 and Congress has won 122 seats.
So BJP has got around 50% to 55% vote share and Congress remains as the main opposition. But in the last 4 years after the 2014 general elections, the BJP stands at the same position with around 50% to 55% vote share. In 2014, BJP had around 50% vote share and the same situation was observed during the 2016 legislative assembly elections.

Therefore, the popularity of BJP in Assam has remained static and has not increased whereas in states where any party comes to power, its popularity increases. For example, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, on gaining power in West Bengal, has tremendously increased its vote share; its vote share at present has increased from 50% to 80%.
Even the Congress, in Assam, witnessed a huge popularity boost in 2011, but the same is not happening with BJP.
